Fitness instructor of the year nominee

FITNESS Instructor Melanya Liwanag Aguila, has been named the 2008 GoodLife Group Exercise Fitness Instructor of the Year Toronto co-Nominee alongside the 2006 Fitness Instructor of the Year recipient Nathalie Plamondon-Thomas.

TORONTO--Filipina Canadian born Melanya Liwanag Aguila, has been named the 2008 GoodLife Group EXercise Fitness Instructor of the Year Toronto co-Nominee alongside the 2006 Fitness Instructor of the Year recipient Nathalie Plamondon-Thomas.

“I am honoured and humbled to be chosen as GoodLife's 2008 Instructor of the Year Toronto co-Nominee and alongside one of my greatest mentors 21 year fitness-veteran Nathalie Plamondon-Thomas,” says Melanya Liwanag Aguila.

Filipinos are the fourth largest visibly-diverse demographic in Toronto and are concerned about their health and well being. The number of Filipino fitness instructors and gym members are increasing. “At GoodLife, one third of the BODYCOMBAT(r) (energetic cardio program inspired by a wide variety of martial arts) Toronto instructor team are Filipino,” notes Aguila.

Melanya became a member of GoodLife Fitness Clubs in November 2002. “I was living in St.Jamestown organizing in the Filipino community while living on the 21st floor of an apartment building. The elevator kept on breaking down. I was smoking, sitting in day-long meetings and eating high cholesterol Filipino foods. I started jogging around the block until winter came along. I joined the gym so that I could continue running,” explains Melanya.

Melanya ventured into Group EXercise classes and got hooked on the magic of the Les Mills(c) programs. “I woke up every morning for interval training indoor cycling RPM(r) at 6:30am. After work I frequented all the clubs to do BODYCOMBAT(r). I was working out around the clock and awe-struck by the fitness instructors. They were honest. They were fit. They were funny. And they made me sweat,” Aguila reminisces.

In 2006, Melanya got her certification in her first love BODYCOMBAT(r). In the past year she got her certifications as a Can-Fit-Pro Fitness Instructor Specialist and in a blend of yoga, Pilates, and tai chi BODYFLOW(r), weight training BODYPUMP(r), incline resistance training GRAVITYPersonalTraining(r), and GoodLife's cardio conditioning and functional training NEWBODY. She currently teaches 12 classes a week and is the GoodLife Toronto Demo Team Captain. In 2007, she made top ten female in the Scotiabank Rat Race for United Way. Full time graphic designer and Fitness Instructor in between, Melanya finds balance in fitness and design. What's next? Latin rhythms ZUMBA(r).
